itsfromabook asked: Shopgirl by Steve Martin is a pretty good novella that takes place in Los Angeles. :) Also, maybe The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler? A lot of people consider him the quintessential L.A. writer.

kyholio asked: The Tropic of Orange by Karen Tei Yamashita is pretty awesome. It uses magical realism and symbolism, and the plot is split between Mexico and LA, but mostly it's about LA when the tropic of Cancer is moved into LA because an enormous orange lands in downtown. The book splits the point of view between several characters, and many readers find it similar to the movie Crash. I hope you enjoy...

L.A.
Hey all, I’m headed to Los Angeles in a few weeks to visit my mom, who has been working in California for a few months now. I’d like to read a few LA-centered books before and during my trip so I need some recommendations.   Help please!?  Thanks everyone.  Also, I’ve read “Bright Shiny Morning” already but might consider a re-read. PS. Read & Heard LA
